5) Water Absorption Technology
Created by KISTI, this water absorbent technology can be used to save energy in regards to heating and cooling systems. The technology can absorb up to 4 times greater than regular absorbents. This is possible because KISTI has lowered the material regeneration temperature to under 70 degree celsius. Normal regeneration temperatures reach up to 200 degrees celsius. Therefore the amount of energy used during this process is cut to a third. Water absorbents are used to make artificial snow, diapers, fire-retardant gel, hot & cold therapy packs, surgical pads, just to name a few.
4) Kevlar Textile Coating Technology
Created by UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology), this Kevlar textile coating method technology is to increase the performance by applying zinc oxide to Kevlar fiber. This increases the shock-absorption factor by 60%. Kevlar is a synthetic fiber known for its high-strenth. Kevlar can be found in bicycle tires, racing sails, body armor, drum heads and even smartphones due to its high tensile strength to weight ratio, which is said to be 5 times stronger than steel. This technology has the potential to be applied in many other fields such as protective supplies to automobiles to war-armor.
3) Medical Robotics Technology
Created by KIMM (Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials) this “Caregiver Robot” could be used for future patients. It is sad to think a person will not have a human that could take care of them like a friend or family member, but that is a sad but real possibility. These robots will support a patient’s recovery and rehabilitation by assisting a patient’s upper and lower bodies. They will be used for patients who have a hard time walking. The robots will not be required to have a controller and will work automatically. These “Caregiver Robots” will be in high demand in Korea. Korea does not have anywhere near enough human caregivers. Hopefully in the future robot caregivers will become much more sophisticated. Since robots don’t need sleep, it will always be available.

Created by ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute), the “Zing” technology can send large quantities of content through a smartphone in just a few seconds. The transmission speed is 3.5 Gbps which is 8,000 times faster than the current NFC (Near-Field Communication) which uses a set of communication protocols that enable two electronic devices to establish communication. This means the new technology will only take about 3 seconds to send a 1 GB movie to and from your smartphone. Since Korea is such a smartphone heavy market, this technology has a lot of potential for commercialization.
